Dear ________,

I just wanted to thank you! You know I don't think you realize how much you inspire me. I am so proud of the person you've become and are becoming. I understand you've been through a lot and you've made not the best of choices, but I can see that you have grown.

Though truthfully I've always known from the very first time I met you to now, that you were a strong person.

You are so full of wisdom about life that when you speak it really makes me think that I could stay there forever just to listen to your open mind, for it is peaceful and inviting.

Andreas, you have become my awakening, you have helped me see things in a brighter way, In a happier, enlightening way. For I was once drowning from my own fears, completely cynical about love, about hope and security. I used to think that no one understood me and could ever.

Then one day before I knew you personally, you flew into my thoughts and at that moment though I wasn't truly sure why you were there. Suddenly I felt reassured and a smile was brought to my heart. Somehow I believe deep down I knew I loved you then.

When I got to know you a year later I realized I wasn't alone and that something inside of you was hurting similar to what constantly brought tears to my eyes. I went through a time in my life where I felt worthless unloved, continuously searching for happiness. I wasn't getting along with my family, and my friends were all hating each other, leaving me stuck in the middle, stressfully trying to pull things together.

But, you made me laugh and forget everything that was going on. That year you became my escape, my survival. I don't think I could of made it through that year as strong as I did if you weren't in my life.

Andreas, I thank you for all the fun times we spent together even if they were short lived. Now over the years I have come to this conclusion you must have been an angel sent by God to help me grieve and become a strong willed woman because no one has ever been able to help me see the light. Clouds of darkness shadowed over me no matter what any other soul would say, but you make me smile with just your presence.

You don't have to say a word; everything's okay when you're beside me. You know I thank God every day for the amazing people he has brought into my life because each and every one of them has changed my life in a very beautiful dramatic way.

And I believe people are brought into your life for a reason, a way in which to guide you and help you see yourself. I like to call all those wonderful people my angels, my earthly angels. Trading Using Multiple Timeframes

If you have ever looked at chart on different timeframes, you probably noticed that markets can move in different directions at the same time. A moving average may rise on a weekly chart, giving a buy signal, but fall on a daily chart, giving a sell signal. It may rally on an hourly chart, telling us to go long, but sink on a 10 minute chart, telling us to short. What the hell is going on?

Let’s play a quick game called “Long or Short”. The rules of the game are easy. You look at a chart and you decide whether to go long or short. Easy. Okay ready?

5 minute chart

Let’s a take a look at a EUR/USD 5-minute chart on 11/03/05 around 4 am EST. Oooh it’s so nice. It’s trading above its 100-day simple moving average which is bullish and look! It just broke out and closed above it’s previous resistance! Perfect time to go long right? I’ll take that as a yes.
Oh! You are WRONG! Look what happens next! It’s goes up a little bit but then drops like rock. Oh too bad.
60 minute chart

Let’s look at the same exact chart on a higher timeframe. It’s the same date, 11/03/05 and the same time, around 4 am EST.

Holy cow! The pair broke out of its down channel which is bullish. It’s trading above its 100-day simple moving average which is bullish. The last candle broke and closed above its previous resistance which is bullish. Looks like a bull, smells like a bull. Nothing but up from here right? You say long.
OH! Zero for two! How do you like your steak cooked? Because from the looks of this chart… the bull got slaughtered. The pair even dropped back into its old down channel. Look at that last candle, it was dropping so much, it couldn’t even stay inside my chart! Amazing!

4 hour chart

Okay, we’ve now moved up to an even higher timeframe chart. A 4-hour chart. It’s still the same date and time, just a higher timeframe. If you had looked at this chart first, would you still have been quick to go long on either the 5-minute or 1-hour chart?

It’s currently trading in a down channel which is bearish. The pair is hitting the upper trend line of the down channel which is extremely bearish. Yes, it’s still trading above the 100-day simple moving average which would count as bullish, but that channel would still make me cautious. Especially since it’s trading around the upper trend line.

Look what happens! Droppin’ like its hot! The pair stayed true to its channel. It hit the upper trend line and traveled down.

Daily chart

For fun’s sake, let’s go up one more timeframe to the daily chart.

Wow, will you look at that? The pair is trading in an obvious down trend. It’s below its 100-day simple moving average and its in a down channel. On this chart, the trend direction is so obvious! Do you also notice the last candle? It tested the upper trend line and reversed. Not a very good bullish sign. Let’s look at what happens next.

Hallelujah! The downtrend continues!

So what's the point?

All of the charts were showing the same date and time. They were just different timeframes. Do you see now the importance of looking at multiple timeframes?

I used to just trade off 15-minute charts and that was it. I could never understand why when everything looked good the market would suddenly stall or reverse.

It never crossed my mind to take a look at a larger timeframe to see what was happening. When the market did stall or reverse on my 15-minute chart, it was often because it had hit support or resistance on a larger timeframe.

It took me a couple hundred bucks to learn that the larger the timeframe, the more important support and resistance levels were. Trading using multiple timeframes has probably made me more money than any other one thing alone. It will allow you to stay in a trade longer because you’re able to identify where you are relative to the big picture.

Summary:

• You have to decide what the correct timeframe is for you.
• Once you've found your preferred timeframe, go up to the next higher timeframe. There you make a strategic decision to go long or short based on the direction of the trend. You would then return to your preferred timeframe to make tactical decisions about where to enter and exit (place stop and profit target).
• Choose a set of timeframes that you are going to watch, and only concentrate on those timeframes.
• Pick three timeframes: 1hr, 4hr, daily — 5 min, 15min, 1hr, and so on. And only use those timeframes. Learn how the market works during those timeframes.
• Use a long-term chart to find the trend, and then return closer to the market to make decisions about entries and exits.
• Using multiple timeframes resolves contradictions between indicators and timeframes. Always begin your market analysis by stepping back from the markets and looking at the big picture.
• Don't look at too many timeframes, you’ll be overloaded with too much information and your brain will explode.
• Make it a habit to look at multiple timeframes when trading.

Choosing The Right Chart Timeframe For You

One of the main reasons traders don’t do well as they should is because they’re usually
trading the wrong timeframe for their personality.

New traders will want to learn how to get rich quick so they’ll start trading small
timeframes like the 1-minute or 5-minute charts. Then they end up getting frustrated when
they trade because it’s the wrong timeframe for their personality.

Okay, so you’re probably asking what the right timeframe is for me? Well, if you had been
paying attention, it depends on your personality. You have to feel comfortable with the
timeframe you’re trading in.

You’ll always feel some kind of pressure or sense of frustration when you’re in a trade
because real money is involved. But you shouldn’t feel that the reason for the pressure is
because things are happening too fast that you find it difficult to make decisions or so
slowly that you get frustrated.

When I first started trading, I couldn’t stick to a timeframe. I started with the 15-minute
chart. Then the 5-minute chart. Then I tried the 1-hour chart, 4-hour chart, and the daily
chart.

Finally after a long period of timeframe unfaithfulness, I felt I was most comfortable
trading the 1-hour charts. The timeframe as longer, but not too long, and trade signals were
fewer, but not too few. I had more time to analyze the market and didn’t feel rushed
anymore.

On the other hand, I have a friend who could never ever ever trade in a 1-hour timeframe. It
would be way too slow for him and he’d probably think he was going to rot and die before he
could get in a trade. He prefers trading a 5-minute chart. It still give him enough time
(but not too much) to make decisions based on his trading plan.

Another friend of mine can’t figure out how I can trade a 1-hour chart because he thinks
it’s too fast! He trades only daily, weekly, and monthly charts. His name is Warren Buffet.
You might know him :).

What is the right timeframe for you? Well, it all depends on your personality. You have to
feel comfortable with the timeframes you are trading in.

Ask yourself the following question: Are you a scalping, short, swing, position or long-term
currency trader? How many hours you want to dedicate to forex trading? You have to find out
before you can choose the right timeframe to trade from.

It is a fact that many forex traders find the right timeframe through trial and error. For
example, while testing systems or strategies in different timeframes, a trader can compare
their performance and then choose the most accurate and profitable timeframe to trade from.

Timeframes can be categorized into 3 main types:

1. Intraday
2. Swing or Position
3. Long-term

Which one is better?

It depends on your personality! Let me give you a breakdown of the three to help you choose:

Intraday Timeframes

Scalpers - The scalper profits from small currency price changes holding positions just for
seconds or minutes. They repeatedly buy and sell several times a day, usually in larger lot
sizes but with small profit margins. the typical objective for a scalp trade is 4-15 pips.
They usually love trading key economic data releases to make quick profits from it.

Preferred timeframes for scalpers are 1 min, 5 min and 15 min chart.

Day traders - The currency day trader buys and sells positions throughout the day, profiting
from short-term trends, the typical objective for a day trade is 15-100 pips. Day traders
tend to be range traders, buying a currency pair low and selling high. Most online currency
traders are day traders. They usually use technical analysis to make trading decisions.

Preferred timeframes for day traders are 5 min, 15 min and 60 min chart.

Swing traders - Swing traders are trying to buy low and sell high, the main difference
between swing - and day traders is the length in holding the open position, typically, swing
traders will hold their open position(s) 2-5days. They usually use technical analysis to
make trading decisions.

Preferred timeframes for swing traders are 60 min, 4 hour chart and daily chart.

Position traders - The main difference between a position trader and swing trader is that
position traders will normally have a longer time horizon than swing traders for holding a
position in a currency pair, typically, position traders will hold their open position(s)
5-50days. They usually use both fundamental and technical analysis to make trading
decisions.

Preferred timeframes for position traders are 60 min, 4 hour chart and daily chart and
weekly chart.

Long-term traders - Long term currency traders usually hold positions for month or even
years profiting from a long term trend. They usually use both fundamental and technical
analysis to make trading decisions.

Preferred timeframes for long-term currency traders are daily chart and weekly chart.

Picking the Right Timeframe

Below table might help you in choosing the right timeframe.

You have to decide what the correct timeframe is for you?

You also have to consider the amount of capital you have to trade. Shorter timeframes allows
you to make better use of margin and have tighter stop losses. Larger timeframes require a
bigger account so you can handle the market swings without facing a margin call.

When you finally decide on your preferred timeframe is when the fun begins. This is when you
start looking at multiple timeframes to help you analyze the market.

Looking At Multiple Timeframes

Looking at multiple timeframes can give you a better idea of what is happening with a currency. For swing trading, we can break this down into 4 time periods. The weekly, daily, 60 minute, and 5 minute timeframes.

The weekly chart

Birds Eye View - Think of the weekly chart as the timeframe that allows you to step back and get a look at the longer term trend. You can only fit so much data on the daily chart so it is hard to see what is really going on with a currency.

On the weekly chart, you want to see that the currency is in an uptrend and if there are any significant chart patterns. Many investors and institutional traders use this timeframe to make buy and sell decisions. So ask yourself, "If I were them, would I want to buy the currency now?"

The daily chart

The Charting Workspace - Swing Traders use the daily timeframe to make their buy and sell decisions. When we "run our scans", we are running them off of the daily chart. This is where we will find our trading opportunities.

However, we would still like to get an idea what the longer term trend looks like. This is where the weekly chart comes in.

The hourly chart

Binocular View - Think of the hourly chart like you were getting out of pair of binoculars and analyzing what is going on with the individual candles on the daily chart. When you "buy pullbacks" off the daily with consecutive lower highs (long positions), you will see that the currency is in a downtrend on the hourly chart.

Buying weakness and selling strength is the art of buying pullbacks. Stocks that are in up trends will pull back offering a low risk buying opportunity and stocks that are in downtrends will rally offering a low risk shorting opportunity.

You are looking for a break of that trendline in this timeframe.

When you say, "I'll buy when the currency trades over the previous high.", what you are really doing is buying that trendline break on the hourly chart. After that happens, then it is time for entry...

The 5 minute chart

Microscope View - This is where we will get our entry. So far, we have found a great setup on the daily chart. We checked the weekly for chart patterns and to make sure that the currency is in an uptrend. We zoomed in using the hourly chart and watched for a break of that trendline.

We have already made our decision that we are going to buy the currency.

The five minute timeframe is used to buy the currency at the best possible price. You really don't need to spend a whole lot of time analyzing this chart. Just look for the currency pull back to a support area (on the long side) to get your entry price. Simple.

Trading tips

• Each timeframe affects the other. A news event affects the intraday (5 minute) chart. This affects the hourly chart, which affects the daily chart, which affects the weekly chart.
• You may be able get a better entry with a tighter stop loss order using the hourly chart rather than the daily chart.
• Look for support and resistance, chart patterns, and candlestick patterns in all timeframes.
• Use the 200 SMA in all timeframes.

Analyzing different multiple timeframes can improve your success as a swing trader. However, you will rarely find a currency the looks absolutely perfect on the weekly, daily, and intraday charts. Your main goal is to identify support and resistance areas that could affect the currency in that timeframe.

The important thing to remember is to pick your main time period then look at a timeframe above it and a timeframe below it. The lower timeframe tells you what is happening now and the higher timeframe tells you what could happen in the future.

Markets Exist In Several Timeframes Simultaneously

Multiple timeframe analysis?! It sounds complicated and fancy, but it simply refers to the same chart with more than one time compression (e.g. daily or weekly). When both the weekly and the daily charts are in harmony, the chances of success can be greatly enhanced.

Markets exist in several timeframes simultaneously. They exist on a 1 minute chart, 5 minute chart, 15 minute chart, a hourly chart, a daily chart, a weekly chart, and any other chart. Traders often feel confused when they look at charts in different timeframes and they see the markets going in several directions at once.

The market may look for a buy on a daily chart and a sell on the weekly chart, and vice versa. The signals in different timeframes of the same market often contradict one another. Which of them will you follow? Most traders pick one timeframe and close their eyes to others — until a sudden move outside of “their” timeframe hits them.

Daily charts are great, but participants can get caught up in the move of the moment. Even though daily charts can contain random movements, they do have their strengths. Once an underlying trend is identified, daily charts can be useful to pick entry and exit points. On the other hand, weekly charts filter out the random movements and can help identify the stronger under currents that are driving the price.

The same idea applies if you are trading any security on a daily basis, in which case, the weekly bars will be the basis for the trend as well as the important support and resistance points. That is the foundation of multiple timeframe trading. Besides the effectiveness of using a method based on a multiple timeframe approach, another advantage is the method need not be complicated. A trader can make his or her method as simple or as complicated as desired. For me, the simpler the application, the better the results.

The proper way to analyze any market is to analyze it in at least two or three timeframes. If you analyze daily charts, you must first examine the weekly charts and so on.

Look at the daily chart of NSE Nifty below. What does it tell you. Most traders would say that it is just the beginning of a downtrend and would be happy to short the market all the way down. Well, most traders are not successful! To be successful in trading any market, one has to first examine the trend on a higher timeframe.

Now look at the chart below of the same security. This is a chart of one timeframe higher than the one above. What does it tell you? Simply, that the long term trend is bullish, and I should be looking to go long rather than short.

The patterns common to timeframes are easily compared with fractals; within each timeframe is another timeframe with very similar patterns, reacting in much the same way. You cannot have an hourly chart without a 15-minute chart, because the longer time period is composed of shorter periods; and, if the geometry holds, then characteristics that work in one timeframe, such as support and resistance, should work in shorter and longer timeframes. Within each timeframe there are unique levels of support and resistance; when they converge, the chance of success is increased.

One primary advantage of using multiple timeframes is that you can see a pattern develop sooner. A trend that appears on a weekly chart could have been seen first on the daily chart. The same logic follows for other chart formations. Similarly, the application of patterns, such as support and resistance, is the same within each timeframe. When a support line appears at about the same level in hourly, daily, and weekly charts, it gains importance.

Laws of multiple timeframes

• Every timeframe has its own structure.
• The higher timeframes overrule the lower timeframes.
• Prices in the lower timeframe structure tend to respect the energy points of the higher timeframe structure.
• The energy points of support/resistance created by the higher timeframe's vibration (prices) can be validated by the action of lower time periods.
• The trend created by the next time period enables us to define the tradable trend.
• What appears to be chaos in one time period can be order in another time period.

A comment on multiple timeframes

In thinking out timeframes it is necessary to understand that you cannot substitute a 10-period moving average of 1-hour bars with a 40-period moving average of 15-minute bars. Similarly, you cannot substitute a 10-week average with a 50-day average.

It seems natural to think that any two trends covering the same time span will give the result, but that is not the case. Although, we can average many data points, we cannot get rid of all the noise; fewer data points over the same time span will always yield a smoother result. Therefore, the use of hourly, daily, and weekly time periods multiple timeframes gives a much different picture of the market than simply using three different moving averages based on the same data.

It is much easier to see the major trend using weekly data, find the short term direction based on daily data, and time short entry using hourly bars.

Why Do We Need To Trade Using Multiple Timeframes?

Many beginners start trading forex looking at one chosen timeframe. They bring along or develop an approach and start testing their knowledge and skills. Sooner or later traders discover that despite all efforts results seems to be random: at one time their trading system would work well, while the other time, seems like under the same conditions, it would fail…

What’s going on?

One of the potential answers may lie in the narrowness of the research done by looking at one timeframe and never knowing what is going on at the more superior level.

There are many forex systems that trade with more than 1 timeframe. Why? It is usually to accurately time the entry to make the trade a "high probability" trade. Some systems however only trade one timeframe such as daily systems as they look for broader and bigger moves in the currency market.

To improve the efficiency of our trading strategy. We see the major trend using a higher timeframe than what we intend to use & a lower timeframe to enter a trade. Say we want to trade using the daily charts. We take the weekly charts to see the major trend.

Suppose it's an uptrend in a weekly chart. We will tend to trade only long positions. We will use entries in the daily charts to enter long positions only. When sell signals are generated we will just exit our long positions. I.e. we don't short sell.

Suppose it's a downtrend in a weekly chart. We will tend to trade only short positions. We will use a entries in the daily charts to enter short positions only. When buy signals are generated we will just exit our short positions. I.e. we don't enter long positions.

Now that we are using two timeframes. Now coming to timing the entry of trades or adding additional positions (pyramiding). We can further use a hourly chart to time our entries. Suppose the weekly & daily charts are in a uptrend. We will enter a long position or an additional long position when a hourly chart gives us a buy signal. Suppose the weekly & daily charts are in a downtrend. We will enter a short position or an additional short position when a hourly chart gives us a sell signal. This timeframe would not be used to exit the trades. It's solely to improve the timing for entry. For exits we would use the signals generated in the daily charts.

The higher the timeframe the more importance it carries.

• 5 minute timeframe is more important than 1 minute.
• 1 hour timeframe is more important than 5 min.
• Daily timeframe is more important than 1 hour.
• Weekly timeframe is more important than daily etc..

The key to successful forex charts analysis lies in the habit to screen timeframes higher than the one you normally trade with. Two superior timeframes is just the right number. Screening more than that could overload traders with information, less than that might be not enough, but still better than nothing.

Let’s avoid philosophy again and go straight to common timeframe pairs.

Fist is the one you trade, second and third are suggested timeframes to check market major trends, important price levels and forming patterns on:

• 1 min => 5 min => 30 min
• 5 min => 1 hour => 4 hour
• 1 hour => 4 hour => daily
• 4 hour => daily => weekly

The main approach here is to start with a superior timeframe, conduct the analysis, identify the main trend and market turning points. Then go 1 step lower, continue the analysis while referring now to the major frame. Then descend to original chosen timeframe and identify trading opportunities that fit the analysis done on the global scale.

Chart Patterns — Definition & Assumptions (xi)

Rounding Top

Technically speaking, a rounding top is a rally to a new high on strong volume, several weeks of light trade with limited upside progress, several more weeks of light trade with a decided downward bias, followed by a sharp move lower on strong volume.

Why Does It Happen?

At first and maybe even second glance, rounding top patterns are going to look very familiar. This is because they have many of the same characteristics of head and shoulders top patterns. Often there will be a very clear "head", that is a rally to a new high in the middle of the pattern. Rounding top patterns differ from garden variety head and shoulders top patterns in that very often there are multiple "shoulders". So, why does this happen? As you might expect, rounding top patterns occur for many of the same reasons as do head and shoulders top patterns. The first part of the pattern will always take shape after an extended rally to new highs. The flow of fundamental news is usually positive and buyers seem willing to pay increasingly higher prices — for a while. Following one positive development the stock rallies to a fresh new high on strong volume but to the surprise of bullish investors, sellers are more than willing to liquidate positions. After a few sessions, the stock begins to move lower on increased volume. Investors and analysts will normally rationalize this development as simple profit taking but the rise in volume and weak price action is a clue, longer-term investors that bought at lower prices are selling, they are using good news to distribute stock. The rally to new highs and pullback to a nearby support level (reaction low) completes the first phase of the pattern. Because the fundamental news remains positive, bullish investors soon return, sending the stock back to test the recent high but once again they are turned back by sellers and the stock drifts back to the reaction low (now key support). Roused by more positive commentary by either the company or Wall Street analysts buyers make another run at what has become overhead resistance and to their delight, the stock pushes to a new high. There is just one problem, volume is even more feeble than the previous two rallies and the move higher stalls. Buyers are beginning to grow anxious because the fundamental news is positive and sentiment excellent yet sellers continue to exert downside price pressure. A new decline begins but the weakness ends as the stock approaches key support. Against the backdrop of more good news on the fundamental front, buyers make two further attempts to push the stock through resistance. During each attempt volume slows progressively and ultimately the stock slumps back to support. At this point buyers have reached their limit, they begin to question everything — yes, the fundamental data is currently strong but will that last? Five rallies have failed. It is at this point of weakness that the first piece of bad news is released. Suddenly all of the assumptions that lead the stock to new highs are called into question, those that had been supporting the stock panic and key support fails miserably. The stock gaps lower and a huge decline begins. Weeks later the stock trades back to longer-term support.

How are Technical Measures and Targets Derived?

Unlike head and shoulders top patterns, rounding tops generally do not lend well to price targets because the pattern is meandering. In most cases one can expect a decline back to the longer-term support level following a break below key support.

Vital Signs

• Symmetry is Important. The most reliable rounding top patterns do not stray from the confines of a tight semi-circle and usually resemble head and shoulders top patterns with two left shoulders, one head and two right shoulders. Obviously askew patterns should be avoided.
• It is important that volume decline on each successive rally in formation of the pattern. The weak volume and rising price is a good indication that distribution is at work.
• Downside breakouts often lead to small 2-3% declines followed by an immediate test of the breakout level. If the stock closes above this level (now resistance) for any reason the pattern becomes invalid.

It makes sense that if we have a rounding top, we can have a rounding bottom. Let's examine that chart pattern.
